Opening a Bank Account
A bank account is essential in Germany. You need it to pay your rent, telephone and broadcasting fees, health insurance and many other bills.
There are numerous banks in Regensburg as well as several online banks to choose from. Upon your arrival in Regensburg, the International Office will provide you with information about local banks.
Which documents do I need to open a bank account?
- Identity card or passport (with visa, if applicable) or German residence permit
- Certificate of enrolment (for students), scholarship or employment contract for research stays
- Address registration certificate
- Tax number from your home country and German tax identification number (Steuer-ID); you will usually receive your German tax ID after registering your address
- Additional documents, if applicable
Visiting scholars may have different conditions. For further information, please contact the Welcome Center
Payment Methods
Cash remains one of the most important means of payment in Germany. Many smaller shops, such as bakeries and butchers, as well as stalls at weekly markets, mainly or exclusively accept cash. Supermarkets and larger shops always offer the option of paying by debit or credit card. Contactless payment via ApplePay or GooglePay is also becoming increasingly widespread, but does not always work reliably.
