Health Insurance
Students need valid health insurance to enroll. This is required by law. Adequate and valid health insurance coverage is also necessary to apply for a German residence permit.
To prove that you have valid and adequate health insurance coverage, you must contact a statutory German health insurance company and submit your proof of insurance. After reviewing your insurance documents, the statutory health insurance company will send an electronic notification of your insurance status to the University of Regensburg.
EHIC / GHIC
Exchange students who have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) do not need to take out health insurance in Germany. The card is valid in all EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland for medically necessary services in the public healthcare system. Please bring your original EHIC with you on arrival.
Further information on the EHIC can be found on the website of the European Commission (external link, opens in a new window).
Students from the UK who have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) also do not need to take out health insurance in Germany, as the GHIC covers medically necessary services in the German public healthcare system.
Please note that the EHIC/GHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. We therefore recommend that you also take out travel insurance for your exchange stay.
Limited Insurance Agreement - Students from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Tunisia
There is a limited social security agreement between Germany and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, and Tunisia, which primarily covers emergency treatment. We therefore recommend that these students consider taking out additional German health insurance.
Statutory health insurance
Exchange students who are required to take out health insurance in Germany have the opportunity to take out statutory health insurance before they arrive in Regensburg. The insurance cover is valid from the day of enrolment (from 1 October for the winter semester and from 1 April for the summer semester).
The monthly membership fee for statutory health insurance is currently around € 135. In the event of illness, the costs are usually settled directly between the doctor and the health insurance company.
Important:
We strongly recommend that students taking part in the preparatory intensive German language course in March and September take out private travel health insurance, as these months are in the period before the start of the semester and are therefore not covered by statutory health insurance.
Private Health Insurance
If you are over 30 years old, you will need private health insurance. Please contact the International Office for advice before taking out private health insurance, as private insurance policies must meet certain criteria in order to be recognised for enrolment at the University of Regensburg or for applying for a residence permit.
