Brief description of the project
What is the aim? A nature trail is intended to sensitise visitors and university staff to the native bird fauna on campus. Fixed signposting should make it easier to recognise them.
Background: The University of Regensburg has been endeavouring to offer a nature trail for some time. The campus offers a large number of biodiversity hotspots, e.g. in the form of habitats such as wildflower meadows, deadwood and bird protection hedges, small orchards and large stands of trees.
Implementation: A basic concept for a potential nature trail for the campus was developed as part of the "Biodiversity in urban areas" seminar organised by the Chair of Zoology. Suitable stations were identified and a possible route suggested. The course participants also discussed the advantages and challenges of a nature trail. An initial timetable for the implementation measures was drawn up in consultation with the organisation team. At a kick-off event on 15 January 2025, most of the existing nesting boxes were inspected and checked for their stability. This provided an initial assessment of the condition of the boxes and their occupancy.
The implementation of the project is planned for the winter semester 2025/2026.
