Irina Garbatzky (PhD in Arts and Humanities - Major in Arts and Literature, Rosario National University, UNR) is an essayist and researcher, specialized in the intersections of literary studies and cultural studies, with a particular focus on transdisciplinary perspective between archives, performance, Latin-American poetry and orality. She is an Independent Researcher of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) of Argentina, and Assistant Professor for Ibero-American Literature and Professor in the Writing and Research Area, both at the Rosario National University.
Her research focuses on the links between literature, poetry, performance and their particular ways of archiving immaterial, social and imaginary experiences in Latin America, especially since the end of XX century.
Central to her work is a conception of archive as a discursive and creative constellation, created not only by documentary materials, but also by voices, gestures, heterotopies and cultural practices. Her privileged frameworks are performance studies and avant-garde studies, especially modern and postmodern reflections on history (traditions, utopies, past futures and transtemporality), biopolitics and corporeality, with a focus on Latin America.
Thematically, she has studied performing and theatrical poetry in South America (Uruguay and Argentina) during the transition to democracy at the end of the XX century, as well as the effects of its archives on literature and arts in XXI century. In the last few years, she has focused on Cuban studies, researching the memory of the connections between the island, the East and the Soviet Union in a wide collection of literary productions since the ‘90 decade. She has reflected on the concept of the archive of the East in Cuban literature as a functional metaphor used by a set of literary productions to convey that unique transcultural experience and to reimagine the boundaries of national identity.
Currently, she is interested in translations, rethinking cosmopolitanisms, migrant archives in Cuba and the Caribbean zone, and also new ways of transnationalization of intellectual Latin American nets, such as the work of Latin American writers based in Berlin.
Furthermore, she is one of the founders of the journal El jardín de los poetas. Revista de teoría y crítica de poesía contemporánea. At the present time, she heads an editorial collection at the prestigious publishing house Beatriz Viterbo, entitled “Migratorias” (About Migrations), and serves on the board of directors of the IECH (Instituto de Estudios Críticos en Humanidades – UNR).
