Barbara Wimmer-Bulin began working as a research assistant at DIMAS under Professor Steigemann on 1 April 2024.
She studied Social and Cultural Anthropology under Prof Hauschild and Sociology under Prof Gildemeister at the University of Tübingen. Since then, she has combined social and cultural anthropological perspectives and methods with artistic research, working as an independent artistic researcher. In this context, she has dedicated herself working on various projects dealing with socially and ecologically relevant issues. Her work has been exhibited internationally and shortlisted for various open calls. She is particularly interested in making knowledge accessible through creative formats. To this end, she uses various outreach formats.
Of particular importance is her project on the implementation of intensive agriculture in a nature reserve in Portugal, which she has been pursuing since the end of her studies. To date, Barbara Wimmer-Bulin has approached the topic both photographically and in essay form. In her role at DIMAS, she is researching the topic for her dissertation with the working title “Competing access to landscape. From arcadia to agro-industrial landscape? On socio-ecological conflicts and resource negotiations during the agro-industrialization in the nature reserve area of the southwest coast of Portugal. An ethnographic case study.”
Her research focuses on political ecology, resource conflicts, and landscapes. She is also interested in questions of homeland, gender, coexistence, dwelling and qualitative research methods. In her university teaching, she combines artistic research and project seminars with classical knowledge transfer, using alternative teaching formats.
Since 2024, alongside her research activities, she also works part-time as a curator for special exhibitions at the Kelheim Archaeological Museum.

Her research focuses on political ecology. In this context, she analyzes the consequences of extractivist practices and draws attention to the interactions between political, economic, and social factors as well as potential environmental problems. Her research takes an interdisciplinary approach that highlights the different scales of economic and political influences on local material and social change. Her research examines the connection between legal systems (rights of nature, human rights) and value creation mechanisms, and she strives to collaboratively develop visions that address methods of exploitation.
