Brief description of the project
What is the goal? With the water dispensers, we want to avoid single-use plastic and make it easier to switch to reusable drinking bottles.
What water comes out of the tap? The water is connected to the university's water supply system. The dispenser is regularly cleaned and maintained to provide you with the best water quality.
Monitoring: The installed monitor shows you in real time what contribution the water station is making to the eco-balance. You can support the company with a voluntary contribution via the QR code on the water station. We analyse the amount of water used.
Did you know that...
- water is the most strictly controlled foodstuff in Germany?
- our climate impact from mineral water is 586 times higher compared to tap water?
- a single person uses an average of 210 single-use plastic bottles, which equates to 17.4 billion for the whole of Germany?
- single-use plastic bottles made from recycled material are actually no more environmentally friendly, as they still require a lot of energy to recycle and the material cannot be optimally utilised?
- around 2.1 billion people have no access to clean water?
- switching to tap water could save around 3 million tonnes of CO2 per year?

Our arguments in favour of a permanent drinking water dispenser:
- Refilling reusable bottles in the toilets is not inviting. Given the situation of the university's toilet facilities, we fear a trend towards more plastic bottles instead of refilling reusable bottles at the toilet sinks.
- The water dispenser is popular! In the period from October 2023 to June 2024, 30,000 litres of water have already been tapped.
- Reusable water bottles are more sustainable than disposable bottles!
- The installation of drinking water dispensers was part of the demands of the "Sustainability Position Paper" by the Sustainability Network, the Student Speakers' Council and other groups. The position paper summarised urgently needed measures for a future-proof, sustainable development for our university. It was intended to inspire change and show that sustainability can also be implemented and practised at our university.
- The quality of everyday student life is increased and the attractiveness of the Audimax as a concert hall is promoted.
