Sandarium

A sandarium is an artificial sand area in the garden or in nature that serves as a nesting and living space for wild bees and other insects.
The Green Office has created such a "home for wild bees" near the campus playground as part of the children's holiday care programme in 2025.

Brief description of the project

New home for wild bees on campus!

What was the goal? To create a habitat for small animals and insects - especially for wild bees ?, which lay their eggs in the soil as soil nesters.

When? On Friday, 8 August 2025, with a group of children as part of the summer holiday care provided by the Family Service.

The campaign was supported by: the R?sl group of companies (sand mixture, transport & implementation), the Botanical Garden (stones, deadwood & plants) and the specialist group for gardening services/outdoor maintenance (excavation of the area).

How do you build a sandarium?

  1. Excavate a sunny area at least 2 square metres in size and 50 cm deep.
  2. First, the children laid the border with large stones.
  3. Then the edges were filled with soil - the children were allowed to shovel vigorously!
  4. The earth was then well trodden down.
  5. At the same time, some of the children sifted stones from the sand they had brought with them, wet the clay, and kneaded it thoroughly.
  6. The clay was placed in a hollow, and then a pile of sand was heaped up next to it, so the wild bees would have enough building material later.
  7. Lastly, the children "decorated" the sandarium with stones and dead wood.
