Bachelor's degree
The Bachelor's degree is the first academic degree with which an academic programme can be completed, usually after six semesters. It is also a first professionally qualifying degree. A distinction is made between the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). The standard duration of study is between 6 and 8 semesters. The Bachelor of Arts usually combines several humanities subjects. In the B.Sc. programmes, natural sciences or economics subjects are often studied. The Bachelor of Education at the University of Regensburg mainly involves combinations of natural sciences subjects, the content of which corresponds to the teaching degree programmes at grammar schools.
Master (Magister/Magistra)
The Master's degree programme (M.A./M.Sc.) is an advanced degree programme lasting approximately two to four semesters. The Standard Period of Study for Master's programmes at the University of Regensburg is usually four semesters. Requirements for admission to a Master's degree programme are a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent first professionally qualifying degree. Which degree programmes or Bachelor's degrees are recognised as admission requirements for the respective Master's degree programme is regulated by the respective Examination Regulations.
The degree programme in Catholic theology represents a special form of study structure. The catholic theology degree programme concludes with the academic degree Magister/Magistra Theologiae (M. Theol.) in a Standard Period of Study of ten semesters, i.e. without a previous Bachelor's degree.
State Examination
In the State Examination, the state or a federal state acts as the examiner. This degree is awarded at the end of teacher training programs, medical degree programmes, pharmacy and law. The Standard Period of Study is between seven and twelve semesters, depending on the subject. The training and examinations are standardised nationwide or state-wide. At university, the programme concludes with the first State Examination. For teaching degrees and law, the first State Examination at university is followed by a so-called Referendariat period outside the university, which is completed with the second State Examination.
