The list of "Highly Cited Researchers" contains the names of scientists whose publications are most frequently cited by other researchers in specialist journals worldwide. Specifically, this means that in the last ten years, they have written articles that were among the top one per cent of the most cited publications in their field and are therefore among the most renowned researchers at universities, research institutions and commercial organisations around the world.

As in previous years, Prof Dr Matthias Mack is once again on the official list of "Highly Cited Researchers" in 2025. The list is divided into 20 subject areas as well as an interdisciplinary category (cross-field) for the Highly Cited Researchers. Prof Mack is listed in the interdisciplinary category for the fifth time this year.

Prof Mack works in the Department of Nephrology at the University Hospital Regensburg on deciphering the role of various immune cells in diseases and pathologies at the molecular level. The focus is on understanding the role of monocytes, T cells, basophil granulocytes and cytokines in autoimmune diseases, transplant rejection and fibrotic diseases. The aim of his research is to develop new therapeutic approaches for clinical application. "I am delighted to receive this award and it shows how important a good flow of information and international collaboration are for successful research," says the honouree.

About the "Highly Cited Researchers"

The list of "Highly Cited Researchers" is compiled once a year by Clarivate, a renowned information services company. The scientific database Web of Science is used as the basis for the analyses. The citations for the years 2014 to 2024 inclusive were used for this year's analysis. The analysis includes publications that belong to the top one per cent of cited articles in a subject area in the Web of Science. In addition, Clarivate uses qualitative analyses and expert judgements to compile the list. Of all the scientists in the world, around one in a thousand make it onto the list of "Highly Cited Researchers". This year, a total of around 380 scientists with an affiliation to a German university were listed in the Highly Cited Researchers.
