Entitled “Communist Regimes and the World Economy since the 1970s,” the 9th Hermann Weber Conference for the Historical Study of Communism will take place on April 22-23, 2027, in Regensburg.

Communist regimes of various kinds were committed to overcoming capitalism, yet they operated within the context of a dynamically changing (capitalist) world economy. This was particularly true for the period from the early 1970s until the collapse of state socialism in Eastern Europe and the USSR between 1989 and 1991. The conference aims to take a comparative look at the consequences of this tension and the relationship between the transformation of the world economy and that of the state socialist countries. Of particular interest is the question of how the different forms of communist systems shaped their respective interactions with the world economy.

Proposals (max. 300 words) and a short CV in German or English can be submitted by February 24, 2026 to: timothy.nunan@ur.de; ulf.brunnbauer@ur.de

Notification of acceptance will be sent by mid-April 2026.

The 9th Hermann Weber Conference is jointly organized by Prof. Dr. Timothy Nunan, University of Regensburg, and Prof. Dr. Ulf Brunnbauer, Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS), Regensburg. The conference is held in cooperation with the Jahrbuch für historischen Kommunismusforschung and supported by the Gerda and Hermann Weber Foundation within the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship (Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur).
