Rules for written exams (= examinations)

Rules for written exams

IMPORTANT: You must always register for the written exam yourself in Flexnow! Even if you have failed a written exam, you must register for the resit exam yourself. You will not be registered automatically. Please note the one-year deadline. This means that a written exam must be passed within one year of first taking the exam (see below).

Participation in a written exam is only possible with registration in Flexnow (PO § 19, para. 2)

If you have registered correctly in Flexnow, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. If you do not receive this e-mail or have problems registering, please contact the Examination Office for Biology/Biochemistry or the degree programme coordinator before (!) the written exam.

Registration for a written exam will be checked before or during the exam, or must be confirmed by the student on a cover sheet by signature.

The registration and cancellation period for written exams ends five working days before the exam (PO § 19, para. 2 and § 27, para. 1).

It is no longer possible to register or deregister after the deadline.

If a written exam registered in Flexnow is not taken, a "failure" (= failed) will be recorded.

Cancellation due to illness

In this case, a medical certificate and a declaration of cancellation must be submitted. See page of the examination office - link!

IMPORTANT! Even if you are unable to take a written exam due to illness, you must register in Flexnow. Only then can the certificate be booked for the exam. And only by registering the certificate will the one-year deadline for the exam be suspended.

A written exam is definitively failed if:

  • the written exam has been failed three times (PO § 25, para. 1), or
  • the written exam is not passed within one year of first taking the exam (PO § 25, para. 1) = one-year deadline. The one-year period is not interrupted by exmatriculation and leave of absence, unless the leave of absence is due to a semester abroad.

Annualdeadline means: If a written exam is not passed on the regular date, for example, this exam must be passed by the regular date in the next year at the latest (the annual deadline can be exceeded by a few days; however, the retake date in the next year would already be too late). This also means that if the resit date is not taken, the number of attempts is reduced to only two attempts.

!!! An exception is the basic and orientation examination (see below). This examination must be passed in the 1st semester! No annual deadline applies here!

Basic and orientation examination

The two module examinations "General Biology - Cell Biology and Botany, Cytology and Anatomy of Plants" (module BIO-BSc-01) and "General Biology - Zoology, Cytology and Anatomy of Animals" (module BIO-BSc-02) in the first semester count as the basic and orientation examination.

If the two module examinations have not been completed by the end of the first semester, the basic and orientation examination is failed for the first time and can be repeated at the next possible examination date. If proof of completion of the modules BIO-BSc-01 and BIO-BSc-02 has not been provided by the end of the second semester, the basic and orientation examination has been definitively failed and the degree programme has been definitively failed.
