The conference aims to examine the contemporary diagnostic thesis of a brutalization of the culture of debate and, by bringing together perspectives from the history of ideas, philosophy, and democratic theory, to contribute to the understanding and further development of a civil culture of debate in liberal democracies.
We ask what basic political concepts (e.g., civility, respect, trust, friendship, community) the history of political ideas has in store to organize the current approaches of normative democratic theory, to understand and evaluate recent developments in the practice of democratic debate, and to develop impulses for its further development and improvement.
By combining perspectives and approaches from the history of ideas, philosophy, and democratic theory, the conference aims to contribute to methodological innovation in the study of political thought: Focusing on the topic of democratic debate culture, the contours of an applied theory of democracy, based on political philosophy and the history of political ideas, are to be developed.?
