Management Information Systems focuses on the possibilities of new, innovative technologies (e.g., mobile technologies and mobile business or social media) in business and public administration. The focus here is on internal information systems (e.g., enterprise social networks) as well as inter-company systems (e.g., Web-/Internet-based systems). Management Information Systems considers information systems from a holistic perspective, i.e., business models, processes and workflows, technologies and application systems and, especially, the people which use these processes and systems (e.g., employees in companies). The knowledge objectives relate to all questions of recognizing new potential through innovative technologies (e.g. new business models on the Internet or through innovations in areas such as IT security) as well as the analysis, design and use of information systems throughout their entire life cycle.
Due to the wide range of possible professions, graduates of the Business Informatics program are not limited to one field of activity, but can look for a job according to their own interests and preferences. This diversity is a big difference to other computer science majors, such as bioinformatics, geoinformatics or media informatics. The main work areas of business informatics specialists are: Internet and electronic commerce, management of business processes, groupware and workflow systems, data protection and data security issues, introduction and operation of standard software, Internet business, new business models and Internet technologies, consulting, project management, organizational design, data analysis (e.g. Big Data), management of information systems, consulting and training, and development and design of information systems to meet new challenges of the information society. Furthermore, a business management orientation is also possible. In this job profile, the focus is on issues relating to the development of new, innovative products and services (e.g., through the use of big data).
