Bachelor of Science
Bachelor of Science: Only a single subject is usually studied. Individual programs may be provided with a small minor subject (module).
The contents of the bachelor's program are deepened and interlinked in the 6th semester within a lecture series. Cross-references between the contents or competences taught there are particularly emphasized. The coherence of the subject chemistry is demonstrated by selected examples. An outlook on current issues of basic research and application-oriented research is given.? The lecture series is concluded with four oral examinations (inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry).
The aim of the bachelor's program is to provide a broad basic scientific education in the core subjects of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, biochemistry, theoretical chemistry) including the necessary fundamentals in mathematics and physics. This results in a fixed study program consisting of 13 compulsory modules. In addition, there is a detailed elective area with a relatively small scope. In addition to the lectures, the focus of the chemistry program is on intensively supervised laboratory lab courses at the university, in which the theoretically acquired knowledge is immediately applied.
The job description of a chemist is very versatile. Many chemists start their career in the chemical industry after completing their Ph.D. Here, there are opportunities in research, product development, production, analytics, environmental protection, marketing, patenting, public relations, etc. Federal and state authorities as well as municipal offices also employ chemists. In this case, they are mainly employed in the areas of monitoring, environmental protection, licensing and supply. Hospitals also hire chemists and biochemists. In addition, some chemists with a Ph.D. also pursue an academic career at university. This involves learning working techniques in new research areas during a Postdoc position (one to two years, usually abroad). Subsequently, one starts one's own research and builds up a working group. Those who want to work in research, but not necessarily at the university, will find opportunities in a rich landscape of national and international research institutes (e.g. Max Planck Institutes, Fraunhofer Institutes, etc.), where the special expertise of chemists is always in demand for very different focal points.
In preparation for professional activities, subject-specific key qualifications and job-relevant competencies are to be imparted. The study program is designed in such a way that, in addition to the acquisition of scientific working methods and the aforementioned integrated overall view of the subject of chemistry, interdisciplinary skills such as self-organization (especially during the bachelor's thesis), preparation of presentations and seminar lectures, evaluation of primary literature in English and interdisciplinary thinking are also acquired, which are relevant for later professional life.
Chemistry is an experimental field - this results in the high level of (obligatory)? lab courses in the program.
No other disciplines are involved
The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 6 semesters. The actual time taken to complete the program may vary. It is limited by the examination deadlines set out in the examination regulations.
180 ECTS
German
Only in winter semester
In view of the very different school foundations, chemistry studies in Regensburg start from zero, including in the subjects of mathematics and physics. (Preparatory courses in chemistry and mathematics are offered to refresh school knowledge). As with all natural sciences, interest in the functions of the world around us, enjoyment of experimentation, and a certain basic understanding of mathematics are important for success in your studies; you should also have a good command of English, the language of science.
No restricted admittance based on grades
General university entrance qualification, subject-related university entrance qualification or vocational qualification.
An application is not necessary, as the program is not admission restricted.
