CV

Prof. Dr. Gerlinde Groitl directs the ISS Institute for Security and Strategy GmbH? in Munich and teaches International Politics at the University of Regensburg’s Institute of Political Science.
Her scholarly work focuses on matters of security and strategy with a special focus on the US, Germany, the EU and NATO as well as the great power competition between Russia, China and the West in a changing global order. The last of her to-date three monographs developed a neoclassical realist model of order contestation and analyzed Russia’s and China’s revisionist assault on the US-led international order (2023). Groitl previously held posts at the University of Freiburg, the University of Passau and the University of Regensburg’s Professorship of International Politics. Visiting fellowships have led her, among others, to the Center for Transatlantic Relations at the Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC, the university think tank LSE IDEAS at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Masaryk University in Brno in previous years. Since 2023 she serves as member of the board of the German Association of Political Science (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Politikwissenschaft/DGfP). Groitl holds a doctoral and a postdoctoral degree in Political Science from the University of Regensburg and recently completed an Executive Education Certificate in Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, a Strategic Foresight Certificate at the Geneva Center of Security Policy GCSP and a MBA Fundamentals Certificate at Oxford University’s Sa?d Business School.
Groitl’s research was acknowledged with multiple awards. Together with Prof. Dr. Eva Odzuck (Political Theory, University of Regensburg) she was awarded the 2023 essay prize of the University of Augsburg’s Jakob Fugger Center for Advanced Studies for their joint work on democracy and violence. Committed to relevant scholarship, she regularly contributes to policy-oriented conferences and projects. In 2020/21 she participated in an expert group project at the German think tank German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik/SWP) in Berlin to analyze long-term political developments in the US. In 2018 she was a visiting fellow to the “American-German Situation Room” project of the German Marshall Fund and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) in Washington, DC. She is also, among others, an alumna of the “Young Leaders in Security Policy” program of the Federal Academy for Security Policy, Berlin.
