The “developmental context” refers to the specific environmental and situational conditions in which an organism grows and develops. This concept, central to developmental ecology, underscores the interaction between environmental factors and biological development. The developmental context encompasses resources (e.g., food, shelter), social interactions, ecological challenges, and cognitive and physical stimuli that influence growth. In Brazil and the Amazon, children’s development is deeply shaped by their cultural, social, and environmental contexts. A rich diversity of knowledge systems, beliefs, and parenting practices contribute to the unique developmental experiences of children in these regions. However, many children face significant challenges, such as limited access to healthcare, education, and opportunities due to structural inequalities, poverty, and discrimination. Addressing these disparities demands culturally sensitive and inclusive approaches that uphold the languages, traditions, and identities of children from traditional communities—such as riverside communities, Indigenous peoples, quilombolas—and those living in rapidly urbanizing areas. Culture plays a fundamental role in shaping human development by influencing beliefs, values, social norms, and educational and caregiving practices. It provides a lens through which individuals understand the world, shaping their interactions, learning processes, and behaviors. Consequently, cultural perspectives also influence perceptions at individual, group, and community levels. Valuing cultural diversity enriches inclusive approaches to education, healthcare, and social policies by fostering respect for varied cultural practices and worldviews. Recognizing and respecting the significance of cultural diversity in the development of children and adolescents is crucial for ensuring their rights and promoting their holistic growth.
Topics of the Seminar:
·?Developmental Ecology Model and Ecocultural Development Model
·?Ecology of Child and Adolescent Development in Brazil and the Amazon: Adverse Childhood Experiences and Social Protection Measures
·?Emotional Socialization Goals in Different Ecocultural Contexts in Brazil and the Amazon
·?Mapping Cultural Diversity in the Brazilian Amazon Through the Study of Parent-Child Interactions in Early Childhood: A Proposal for Cross-Cultural Research

Currently, thesis projects or research internships are available in the following areas:
How do infants learn that objects continue to exist when they are out of sight? In an EEG study with infants aged 4 to 11 months, we offer the opportunity to support data collection and (if desired) gain insights into EEG data analysis. If you are interested and would like further information on this topic, please contact Marlena Baldauf directly at marlena.baldauf@ur.de.
How does parental behavior and early cognitive development differ across cultures? We are analyzing data from parent-child interactions from Nigeria, Brazil, and Germany with a focus on language and socialization strategies.
When is a movement perceived as an action and when is an action seen as intentional? In a pilot study with adults, we aim to create stimuli that distinguish between movement, action, and intention, which will be tested in a data collection phase with adults.
EEG and fMRI studies on neural oscillations and memory: We will be starting EEG and fMRI data collections with adults in the coming months, focusing on the topic of neural oscillations and memory. Thesis projects in this area are available.
If you are interested and would like more information, please email Moritz Koester at moritz.koester@ur.de.
