Summary
Chromatin remodelers are key players in the regulation of chromatin accessibility and nucleosome positioning on the eukaryotic DNA, therefore they are essential for all DNA dependent biological processes. There are mounting evidence that variety of cancers employ chromatin remodelers: they can be downregulated or even lacking functional protein, overexpressed, carry somatic mutations or support cancer through the interaction with long noncoding RNA. In parallel, the promise of epigenetic therapies is growing. It seems that targeting and exploring the pharmaceutical potential of deregulated chromatin remodeling machines might lead to more efficient personalized cancer therapies.
We are studying chromatin remodeling complexes and trying to further understand the mechanisms of how chromatin remodelers act in cancer using a combination of biochemical, molecular biology, genetic and mammalian cell culture techniques. In collaboration with 2bind company we are characterizing the cancer occurring mutations in chromatin remodelers.

Awards and News
October 2024
Robertas Pranevi?ius, a PhD student in biology at the Institute of Cardiology at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and a cardiologist at the Hospital of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences "Kauno Klinikos," had a short stay at Biochemistry III, University of Regensburg from October 1 to 12, 2024. The exchange was a valuable experience for both parties, fostering collaboration and shared insights. Discussions ranged from teaching medical students to exploring epigenetics in cardiology. The experience and knowledge gained during this stay will be applied in a forthcoming research project titled "The Link between Coronary Artery Disease, Bacteria, and Viruses" (Principal Investigator: Dr. Vacis Tatarūnas).
