Dan Batovici: Peter the συμπρεσβ?τερο? and the Patristic Reception of 1 Peter 5:1-4

This paper offers a discussion of the patristic reception of the first four verses of the last chapter of 1 Peter – the exhortation to the presbyters – drawing on research undertaken in preparation for the second Novum Testamentum Patristicum volume on 1 Peter. The survey of witnesses will shown that although this interesting passage is potentially relevant for debates surrounding the development of office of presbyters, it is mostly used for its moralising content, as text-proof for pastoral preparation. ... more

Antti Laato: Reading Isa 8:4 inside Isa 7:10-17 – An Attempt to Understand Justin Martyr’s Isaiah Exegesis

The aim of this paper is to discuss why Justin quotes twice Isa 7:10-17 so that Isa 8:4 is compiled inside the text (Dial 43; 66). Was such a quotation Justin’s own idea or did he adopted an earlier tradition to read these two Isaianic texts together? ... more

Nathan Betz: Ideas on the Move. The Case of Revelation’s “New Jerusalem” in Asia, Rome, Alexandria, and Carthage

Every great city demands a worthy account. The New Jerusalem, the holy city described at the end of John’s Revelation (chs. 21–22) and taken up by countless generations of Christian and non-Christian thinkers alike, has until recently gone without such an account. My recently-submitted doctoral dissertation ... more
